Open Game License Unpacked

Posted on 24 March 2011

In open gaming, which is where my interest in libre began, the Open Game License is probably the most commonly used licence. Two of the bigger RPG brands — Dungeons & Dragons 3rd edition and FATE — use it. Because these are copyleft licences (I’ll talk more about copyleft another time), anyone who wants to write material which is compatible with D&D 3E or FATE needs to use the OGL.

Unfortunately, being obliged to use a licence does not mean you understand it. I wrote this 1-page PDF to try to explain how the OGL works and how to use it.
