Which Parts of Creative Commons #giveopen List are Actually Free, Libre and Open?

Posted on 4 December 2013

Creative Commons put out a holiday gift guide with ‘a few of our favourite openly licensed gifts’ (https://creativecommons.org/weblog/entry/40991). There’s some great stuff on there, but unfortunately many of the gifts are not free, libre and open.

Free, libre and open

Sita Sings the Blues Merchandise: Sita Sings the Blues is under a CC0 licence. Assuming the merchandise faithfully reproduces elements of the movie, it should be free, libre and open. (http://questioncopyright.com/sita.html)

The Public Domain Review: The review itself is under CC Attribution-ShareAlike. (http://publicdomainreview.org/store/posters-and-prints/)

Team Open: Looks like all the assets for the Team Open cards are available on Github under CC0.(https://donate.creativecommons.org/?utm_campaign=2013fund&utm_source=blog3&utm_medium=blog)

Group Works: The Group Works booklet is CC Attribution-ShareAlike, and I believe the accompanying card deck is too. (https://donate.creativecommons.org/?utm_campaign=2013fund&utm_source=blog3&utm_medium=blog)

Non-free, libre and open

xkcd 0: This books – and the xkcd comic more generally – is under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial licence. (http://xkcd.com/license.html)

Cards against Humanity: Cards Against Humanity is a great game, but it’s CC Attribution-ShareAlike-NonCommercial. (http://cardsagainsthumanity.com/)

Dead Unicorn’s ‘Pandemic’: This album is under CC Attribution-ShareAlike-NonCommercial. (http://deadunicorn.bandcamp.com/)

Phylo: This is the first I’ve seen of Phylo, and it looks terrific – but that’s a CC Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs licence on it. (http://phylogame.org/)

This Stool Rocks: This stool seems pretty cool, but with a CC Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike licence, it is not free, libre or open. (http://www.behance.net/gallery/This-Stool-Rocks/7797049)

Open Design Now: Ironically, given the title, Open Design Now is non-open with its CC Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike licence. (http://opendesignnow.org/index.php/creative-commons/)
